Happy Earth day everyone; seems like a good day to Happy Earth day everyone; seems like a good day to post another pic from my latest project . The latest stage of the work takes me to the  Electron Microscopy Suite of the Open University, in search of dust, well a certain kind at least; my apologies to Phillip Pullman. #OurDarkMaterials)

Invisible particles less than 2.5-10 microns wide prevalent in areas of poor air quality like the Northcircular road, are responsible for a multitude of health conditions.  Having hung the original  photographic prints on the side of the A406  each image now  has a collection of dust particles .
As we progress closer and closer in the series the final image presents the photograph at a level where we can actually see the particle matter at the size where it causes  all the problems- PM2.5 ;  finally making the invisible visible! This image is taken using an electron microscope.

The thinking that has inspired this idea was the introduction of  clean air act of 1956 that was directly linked to the great London smog of 1952; seeing is believing I suppose.

More on this process on my blog louisquail.com/blog

Dieselgate: Three-quarters of European diesel cars Dieselgate: Three-quarters of European diesel cars ‘likely’ to have emissions-cheating devices, study finds This week; reminding us we all still need to be vigilant about improving our air quality and holding these cheating manufacturers to account. This project draws attention to the problems of the particulate matter issued by our vehicles at sizes so small (pm2.5-10) they slip past our bodies defences and cause multiple health problems. By photographing the dust captured on the road using electron microscopy. We can actually see the dust , the invisible killer made visible if you will. See the previous posts for further details and the link to the blog post above.

As you can see from the series each stage takes me in closer to the photograph as an object;  the intention being to draw attention to  and visualize the problems of poor air quality.

The conceptual development here has also allowed me the opportunity to explore  a whole new visual  strategy (for myself at least)  which connects me to a whole lexicon of artists and photographers who seek to reveal something different in the recreation of the same. Right now I’m thinking of Claude Monet’s haystacks and Andy Warhol;  be interested in your thoughts though. More on this process on my blog louisquail.com/blog

So one last post for Remembrance Sunday. I’ve b So one last post for Remembrance Sunday. I’ve been posting a selection of images from the ‘Before They Were Fallen’ series. This year Im excited to share the news that the work is currently being archived by the Imperial War Museum. This is incredible for me ; Every participant who took part did so because they wanted to share the stories of their loved ones and their sacrifice ‘so they might be remembered’. Archiving them at the IWM means we can continue with this ambition in the most significant way.

The central concept of the work is the recreation of a family snap. The pair of pictures; the original and the recreation, show a space where the soldier should be; encouraging the viewer to compare the past - before the soldier was fallen - and the present. The image is also a visual tool, to harvest attention and direct it towards the 15 amazing interviews by journalist and author @reegzwrites which tell the stories of loss from the perspective of the families of the fallen. Stories available to read on my website .

TONI O’DONNELL is the widow of Warrant Officer Class 2 Gary 'Gaz' O'Donnell GM & Bar from 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, who was killed on Wednesday 10 September 2008, in Helmand province. He was 40.

SARAH ADAMS from Cwmbran in Wales lost her son, Private James Prosser, a warrior infantry vehicle driver serving in the 2nd Battalion the Royal Welsh when he was killed as a result of an explosion in Helmand, Afghanistan on September 27th, 2009. He was 21.
